Take a short ride with me on a Burgman 650 Scooter. This Scooter has a ECCVT (Electronically Controlled Constantly Variable Transmission). The ECCVT has three modes of operation that can be switched at any time, or speed. Manual Mode gives you five presets, and feels just like a "regular" 5-speed transmission. If you are over-reved it will not shift down though. It's "smart". So you need to be smart too when you ride! Hands only on this bike. The feet have only to "hang on". Drive Mode lets the ECCVT work for maximum MPG. Power Drive Mode lets the transmission ratio go a "gear or two" lower, while still being totally seamless. Main thing with this set up is one must, or should always use the Manual Mode when taking any twisties! The ECCVT's Manual Mode removes all the "automatic" play from the drivetrain, so one can use the engines compression to slow the Scooter while entering a turn etc. Manual Mode shifting is done by push button controls on the handle bars. The 2004 Burgman 650 Scooter has three switches on the left handle bar to control the ECCVT. Instead of a clutch lever on the left side, on the Burgman it's a rear brake. This leaves all control to the hands. The feet only move about on the large running boards, and when solo riding, one may also use the passenger boards, which are not just more rear, but much higher.
